Description
The Friendly Grocer program matches volunteers to seniors or adults with disabilities living in the south end of Ottawa (between Riverside and Huntclub) to support with grocery shopping. Friendly Grocer volunteers arrange a time and date to shop with the client every 1 to 2 weeks as needed. Hours are flexible but generally clients prefer weekday and daytime. The volunteer is responsible for transporting the client to and from the grocery store and assisting with shopping. Tasks may include: reading labels, pushing shopping carts, searching for grocery items, helping help lift heavy items, reach items that can be too high and/or too low. The role also involves social connection to reduce isolation of clients in the community. Paring the outing with a social visit is ideal. The is a very rewarding role with very tangible impacts.
